Armstrong Siddeley Typhoon Coupe

Based on the Armstrong Siddeley Hurricane, the Typhoon Coupe was an entry-level version, built between 1946-1953. The chassis included independent front suspension through longitudinal torsion bars, as well as a live rear axle with leaf springs. A Girling hydro-mechanical braking system was installed, with the front drums hydraulically actuated and the rear drums operated by rod and cable.

The Typhoon was initially equipped with a 70 horsepower 1991 cc, six-cylinder, overhead-valve engine brought over from the pre-war 16 hp type, but this was increased to 2309 cc and 75 horsepower in 1949 by extending the cylinder bore from 65 to 70 mm. Most engines used hydraulic tappets, but towards the end of manufacture, solid tappets were installed. There were two transmission options: a four-speed manual with synchromesh on the first three gears or a pre-selector gearbox. Steel and aluminium panels were installed over a wood-and-aluminium frame with a fabric roof to create the four-seat, two-door body. The doors were rear-hinged, a style that has affectionately been named 'suicide doors'.
