Alvis 12-70

Alvis 12 - 70 Tyres

  • The 12/70 was produced between 1937 and 1940, with only 741 made in total.
  • If you want Alvis 12/70 tyres that suit steady road use we suggest the 5.25/5.50 x 17 Lucas.
  • For the more "exuberant" or "spirited" driver we think the stronger structure of the 5.25/5.50 x 17 Dunlop D2/103 would be better suited.
  • For either choice of tyre, Longstone advises that the Alvis 12-70 innertube to have is the Michelin 17/18E innertube.

History of the Alvis 12/70

The Alvis 12/70 was a 4-cylinder sports saloon or coupé produced between 1937 and 1940 that was similar to the more costly 6-cylinder Alvis Silver Crest. To save money, the majority of the bodywork was outsourced to businesses outside of Alvis. The four-cylinder 1,842 cc pushrod overhead valve engine built by Alvis was comparable to the engine used in the Alvis Firebird but was a novel design. Its 63 horsepower was sufficient to drive the vehicle to a maximum speed of around 80 mph. Alvis also created the four-speed gearbox with synchromesh on the top three gears. Though production didn't continue after the war, its post-war successor the Alvis TA 14 carried over a lot of the original model.
