175/70 R15 Tyres - Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ on 175/70 WR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36 Tyres

Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ on 175/70 WR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36 Tyres

  • We recommend the 155 HR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ CA67 tyre, as both the original fitment and the best Alfa Romeo Giulia tyre.
  • Our fitment guides from the period suggest that all Giulia models were released on tube-type (TT) wheels.
  • We advise against installing larger tyres since they can adversely affect the vehicle's driving performance. However, if you opt for larger, wider, low-profile tyres, the 175/70 WR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36, with its rounded design, would be your best choice to minimize negative effects.
  • For these 15" tyres we would suggest the Michelin 15E innertube as the best fit.
  • For a Giulia produced after 1969, the 165 HR 14 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67 is the original and best tyre.
  • The other option for the Giulia fitted with 14” wheels is the 165 HR 14 Michelin XAS is an asymmetric option offered by Alfa in period.
  • For these tyres the Michelin 14D is the ideal Alfa Romeo Giulia innertube.
  • If you desire a wider tyre on your Giulia, the 185/70VR14 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ CN36 is the only genuine period tyre in this size.
  • For these tyres the Michelin 14E is the correct Alfa Romeo Giulia innertube.
  • For use on the track we have the Avon CR6ZZ, a range of road legal racing tyres that are excellent for track racing. These tyres are built for performance over longevity however, so we recommend a CA67 or CN36 for most drivers.
  • The Avon CR6ZZ range offers the 155 H 15 Avon CR6ZZ, the 175/70 HR 15 Avon CR6ZZ, and the 185/70 HR 14 Avon CR6ZZ for racing use in the Alfa Romeo Giulia.

The Alfa Romeo Giulia when leaving the factory originally fitted 155 HR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67 until around 1969 when it changed the size to the 165 R 14 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67. The PIRELLI CINTURATO ™; is still an excellent choice of tyre for the Alfa Romeo Giulia as it provides improved handling & less wandering on the road without making the steering too heavy, all whilst retaining the period look of the car. Today people often want to fit wider tyres to their Giulia. It is worth pointing out that if Alfa Romeo had thought that these cars would have handled better with a wider lower profile tyre they would have fitted them. Alfa would have tested a new low-profile tyre that became available in 1968, which is the same time they chose to fit the cars with a 165 - 14.

However if you really do want to put a wider tyre on your car, by far the best is the 185/70VR14 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™; CN36. This is currently the only genuine period tyre in the size, and also the only road tyre in this size that is built to suit cars of this era.

History of the Alfa Romeo Giulia

The Alfa Romeo Giulia 1600 Saloon, Sprint and Spider were all launched in 1962 at the Autodrome in Monza. All of the varieties on offer were high-performance cars, however, the 1600 Saloon was obscure, with its cut-off tail styling. The mechanics and bodywork were very advanced for the time, sporting such technologies as a live back axle. Even more so, the 1750cc engine from the Giulietta offered tremendous power for the time. It was designed for long motorway journeys at high speed, but also to be peppy enough for city driving. The most famous sporting versions of the Alfa Romeo Giulia were the GTA and the TZ. The GTA was designed to take part in the Touring category, hence it was equipped with aluminium doors and a bonnet.

Q: What were the original tyres on the first Alfa Romeo Giulia?

A: Originally, like the earlier Alfa Romeo Giulietta the Giulia fitted 155R15 Pirelli Cinturato tyres because they are such a great handling radial tyre. At the end of the 1960s to give a slightly softer and more comfortable ride, Alfa moved the Giulia onto 14” wheels and fitted 165HR14 Cinturato tyres. They also offered the option of the 165HR14 Michelin XAS Asymmetric tyre.
