1972 Alfa Romeo Alfetta Quattroruote Test Drive

The newly-launched Alfa Romeo Alfetta during a test for Italian automotive magazine Quattroruote in the summer of 1972.

Alfa Romeo Alfetta 1972–1987

  • Longstone's recommended Alpha Romeo Alfetta tyre is the 165 HR 14 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67, the original fitment for this model.
  • Michelin make a 165 HR 14 Michelin XAS which is another option of tyre that Alfa Romeo fitted to their Alfetta models.
  • At the start of production the Alfetta had tube-type wheels. Later models switched to tubeless wheels. To find out the original Alfetta innertube requirements see our Innertube Guides.
  • All Alfetta models released before 1979 left the factory with innertubes and tube-type tyres.
  • For these tyres, the Michelin 14D is the correct size to fit.
  • Most of the Alfetta models left the factory fitted with 165 - R14 tyres, however, sporty models fitted wider low profile 185/70R14 tyres.
  • The 185/70 VR 14 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36 was original equipment on cars like the Alfetta GTV.
  • Another excellent period option would be the 185/70 R 14 Michelin XAS. This is currently the best road tyre available in this size and it is also a tyre that Alfa fitted in the period to some of their cars.
  • The right Alfa Romeo Alfetta innertube for these tyres is the Michelin 14E.
  • For information regarding the ideal Alfa Romeo Alfetta tyre pressures see our tyre pressures and fitment guides.
  • Later Alfetta GTV models fitted 195/60R14 tyres for which we would suggest the 195/60 VR 14 Michelin MXV3-A.
  • For a complete list of GTV models and fitments see our Alfetta GTV page.

History of the Alfa Romeo Alfetta

Alfa Romeo Alfetta PIRELLI CINTURATO â„¢;

Alfetta Tyres

The Alfa Romeo Alfetta is a rear-wheel-drive executive saloon vehicle and a fast coupe made by Alfa Romeo from 1972 until 1987. It was popular owing to its mix of a simple design and a strong engine, selling over 400,000 units before being phased out. Sales decreased in the last few years due to Alfa Romeo's dependability issues, which plagued the business during the late 1970s and early 1980s.

The Saloon's body was developed by Centro Stile Alfa Romeo, while Giorgetto Giugiaro created the Alfetta GTV coupe (not to be confused with the classic Giulia GTV). The Alfetta marked the introduction of a new powertrain arrangement to the brand. The clutch and transmission, as well as the differential, were housed in the back of the car for more balanced weight distribution, as seen on the Alfetta 158/159 Grand Prix cars. The suspension was made up of twin wishbones and torsion bars in the front and a de dion beam in the back.

In 1979, the Alfetta was updated with a new front end, new wheel rims, and new lighting, as well as a diesel variant! It has two four-cylinder double overhead cam engines with two valves per cylinder and a VM Turbo-Diesel engine. The 1.6 and 1.8 L basic versions were equipped with two double-barrel carburettors, while the 2.0 DOHC got fuel injection in 1979. The diesel engine's displacement was initially 2.0 L, but it was enlarged to 2.4 L in 1982.

From 1975 to 1977, the four-door Alfetta was offered in the United States as the Alfa Romeo Alfetta sedan. 'Sport Sedan' was a modestly restyled variant that was available from 1978 to 1979. From 1975 to 1977, the four-cylinder coupe was known as the Alfetta GT. Finally, the V-6 variant was sold as the GTV-6 from 1981 until 1986.

Since it was popularised by Italian Prime Minister Aldo Morro, the classic Alfa Romeo Alfetta has become well recognised around the world. When he was kidnapped and eventually assassinated by the Italian Terrorist left-wing organisation The Red Brigades in 1978, the Alfetta was the official escort car. The Advocate, a critically acclaimed Italian film that extensively used the classic, was based on a fictionalised depiction of these events.

We fit Alfa Romeo's Alfettas of all types, from Carabinieri 'Short Nose-Round Light' through to the Prime Minister's own 'Long Nose-Square Light' 2000 Super Saloon!
